I think it's pretty clear at this point that Nothing, at its heart, is a community-focused brand. A testament to this fact is the Nothing Community Edition project which was announced in March. The idea? Offer a phone designed, packaged and marketed by the community. NOW, “six months, four steps, one phone” later the Nothing Phone 2a Plus gets its community edition and I got my hands on it.
Thanks to Nothing, I already had a good idea of what the Phone 2a Plus (test) Community Edition would look like. The 2a Plus phone initially launched in gray and black choice of colors. The community edition sees it covered in green everywhere, but…
There’s a wacky touch!
Just as we saw with the Nothing Phone 2a Blue Edition's dark indigo embracing an ash blue tone, we see a delicate baby green merging into white. Above is the glyphs interface, divided into three bands and covered with the new color palette. And, get this, the green leaf that stretches across the back panel from top to bottom. glow in the dark!
Yes, just like those star ceiling stickers you loved so much as a kid. Well, I still am, and this wacky addition made me all kinds of nostalgic. Not to mention it looks cool without sounding cheesy. Add the glyph interface to the mix and it creates a pretty amazing light show combination.
As always, there is also some attention to detail. Nothing has also shrouded components like the screw at the top right of the module in green, however, it does not glow in the dark. However, those four spots on the back panel where the sheet is exposed shines too in the dark. You will spot them at the top left of the back panel.
I placed it directly against a strong light source for a moment and the glow-in-the-dark green lighting came to life. However, it went from that illuminating glow-stick green to a shade that faded quite quickly, after which it was only visible in a very dark room. Solid Ben 10 vibesnevertheless!
Aside from that, there's the usual vertical Nothing branding on the bottom left of the rear panel alongside the unmistakable CE marking on the other side, all in a black dot-matrix font.
The frame is however white, with the light green border meeting him at the back. However, this border does not glow in the dark. Also, instead of shiny silver screws, this time we see black screwsand I don't particularly like it. It doesn't blend well, in my opinion, and ends up looking like small bullet holes on the light colored back. Silver screws would have complemented the overall color scheme quite nicely.
But I think I understand why it was designed that way, because the the volume rocker and power buttons are also covered in blackand would not have stood out against the white frame. There are also six new wallpapers that pair well with the new color option, ranging from a mix of transparent green and white to gray and black. A nice aesthetic addition, actually.
It's not just the phone that turns green
However, the new color scheme does not just apply to the device itself and is also reflected on the outside, in the box. More importantly, the box also glows in the dark, with the “(2a) Plus”, “Community Edition” and other lettering emitting that cool green light. Way to be the life of the party, nothing!
Apart from that, the the green on the box is quite lushgiving off a very ecological atmosphere. When you open the box, the words, “A manifestation of collaboration. A device built for and by the community,” greet you wholeheartedly.
Just below we also see the credits due for the hardware concept, device wallpapers, packaging design and marketing campaign given to the respective designers. Honestly, I'm glad to see that the phone isn't as green as its box.
Nothing beats the gray variant of the Phone 2a Plus, IMHO, and it should be my favorite shade. I would probably choose the Green Community Edition as my second favorite, with the black one being the least.
However, the Nothing Phone 2a Plus Community Edition makes it look a little too much like the regular Nothing Phone 2a, as the glyph sheet doesn't have that natural metallic sheen, without the glow-in-the-dark properties.
It was the only thing that allowed me to distinguish the two in terms of design. Now it's the same, unless you take it to a very dark room. Not to mention that on the specifications side too, there are no changes.
Phone 2a Plus Community Edition is a remarkable initiative
The good news is that Nothing doesn't cost more, and at Rs 29,999it costs the same as the 12GB/256GB variant of the regular Phone 2a Plus. However, only 1,000 units of this Community Edition will be sold worldwide. So, if you are interested in this variation, I ask you to hurry up and register yours here. Sales open from November 12!
But I would really like to see brands collaborate with their respective communities to give us special edition phones that reflect the choices of those same communities. Not only does this allow us to enjoy more unique designs, but it also deepens the connection between a brand and its users. Well, who's next?
