Guide PlayStation CEO says PS5 Pro is a '5 year project', development started before PS5 launch

PlayStation Co-CEO said development of the PS5 Pro began before the PS5 launched.

Sony's console was released on November 19, 2020 but according to Sony Interactive Entertainment's platforms business group CEO Hideaki Nishino, development of its mid-generation upgrade had begun before then.

“We did a Pro version on the last generation,” Nishino told Variety. “We learned a lot from there. When we sold PS4 Pro, in addition to PS4, 20% of customers also got PS4 Pro.

“It's high end, it's premium level. So there are potential users who acquire such units. Interestingly, it's not just about highly engaged users – in fact, new users are also coming to PlayStation to get a PS4 Pro.

“So we started working on the PS5 Pro before the PS5 even launched – this is another five year project for us. So there was a conversation around whether we wanted to do Pro again or not.

“But the most important thing is, there is technology that we can develop in three or five years. So innovation and technological progress is faster in the modern world. Phones are updated every year, PCs are updated every year.

“I don't think we're going to update every year, but there are things we can package together to bring the greatest things to the gaming console segment. So that's the vision.”

Nishino added that Sony never releases new hardware without planning a successor.

“We are happy to see it [that] “Most gaming users are interested in PS5 Pro, and I'm sure new users will also use PS5 Pro,” he said. “If it's PlayStation you want to get, that's the deal. So that's where we designed the current generation.

“We design everything with one thing in mind. It doesn't mean we just take one next step and don't know two steps ahead. That's not the way we work, because we need to ensure that the 10-year generation cycle continues to run smoothly.”
