A player has uncovered a secret message hidden in a photo puzzle of the Silent Hill 2 remake, prompting its creative director to reveal that Bloober Team thought it was too difficult.
This article contains spoilers for the Silent Hill 2 remake.
Hidden throughout the game are 26 Polaroid-like photos, which have a number on one side and a photo with a message on the other.
The players are confused by the photos and try to figure out how the photos fit into their knowledge.
Reddit user DaleRobinson finally managed to figure out the meaning behind the photos, sharing his findings on Reddit's Silent Hill page.
Each photo shows a number of objects – a building with six open windows, a door with three reflected sides, a church entrance with seven birds flying across it, and so on.
Players realize that by taking each number and counting the number of letters in the message in each photo, they can eventually spell out a message.
For example, the photo marked number 23 shows a floor with eight bloody footprints on it, and the message “Parents are always ready.” The eighth letter in the message is A.
By arranging all the letters in numerical order, the player gets the hidden message: “YOU HAVE BEEN HERE FOR TWO DECADES.”
The message appears to refer to the fact that the game is a remake, but players have started to theorize that the remake is part of a time loop, where James keeps visiting Silent Hill over and over again (which also explains why the game was remade). the character design originally looked older before Bloober Team changed it due to fan reaction).
After the discovery, the game's creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart via X revealed that Bloober Team found the puzzles too difficult.
“I knew it wouldn't stay hidden for long,” Lenart said. “There is a theory in our company that this puzzle may be too difficult. I really wanted to make it more subtle when I painted the photos, I think the timing is perfect for you to finish it. Happy!”
