The Penguin has left viewers with a multitude of twists and turns since the beginning, but none of them have intrigued us as much as the recent episode. That's because he killed off a major character without allowing us to prepare for the shock. Yes, you guessed it right, we're talking about Salvatore Maroni, who teamed up with Sofia to avenge the deaths of his wife and son from Oz. However, now that he is dead, we are discussing how the gangster dies in the TV series as well as the comics.
How did Salvatore Maroni die in The Penguin?
Salvatore Maroni dies of a heart attack while trying to escape the clutches of Oz. Following the kidnapping of his mother, Oz is approached by Salvatore's men, who take him to their boss. Seeing him, Sal couldn't control his rage and started beating Oz instantly with the stick he got from the enemy's apartment. Initially, Sal has the upper hand over Oz because no one from his army is there to support him. “They were my blood, my wife,” Sal said as he beat him. He then says that Oz must put off the delivery of the new drugs to Sofia if he wants his mother back.
Oz would not give up so easily, so he led Sal and his men to his base of operations, where his men awaited the enemies. One of Oz's men turned out the lights and the fight between the two armies began. Just as Oz is about to kill Sal, he dies of a heart attack. Oz never wanted him to die like that, because he wanted to kill him with his own hands. So, he shoots the already dead enemy several times to satisfy himself.
How does Salvatore Maroni die in the comics?
In the comics, Sal Maroni opposes several powerful DC characters and dies at the hands of the likes of Holiday and Harvey Dent. It was Sal who created two faces in Harvey by disfiguring his face by throwing acid on him. So, Harvey Dent killing Sal is the character's story coming full circle.

While Sal's story has taken different directions throughout his run in the DC comics, in most storylines he was taken down by Harvey Dent. In fact, it was hinted in the comics that Holiday, who in one comic book edition killed Sal, was Harvey Dent in disguise. However, in the Penguin TV show, it was a heart condition that killed Sal.
