Rex Calabrese was an influential gangster who lived in Gotham long before Batman existed. Even though he was a gangster, his neighborhood respected and loved him. This is because he never failed to show genuine care for the people around him. He also somehow became the one who encouraged Oswald to choose this path.

He was the crime boss in one of Gotham's poorest neighborhoods, so he never became as important as other gangsters, like Carmine Falcone. Moreover, unlike the prestigious gangsters Falcone and Sal Maroni, Rex has never renounced his humanity. For example, whenever anyone around him asked him for help, he never failed to show up.

Calabrese invaded the city until Carmine Falcone eclipsed him and hid. Before going to prison, he adopted a new name, Leo Leone, so that no one would recognize him as Rex.

However, in Batman Eternal #20, where Penguin and Falcone are finally arrested and sent to the same prison where Leo Leone was, the Baron was unable to keep his secret identity any longer. He couldn't escape the prison, so he decided to guide his daughter, Selina, who everyone knew as Catwoman, to carry on his legacy. The girl who used to commit petty theft for a living didn't take long to succeed in the underworld.

At one time, a heart attack became the cause of Rex Calabrese's death in prison. He became the first gangster to receive an honored farewell from the residents of his neighborhood.
